SpeakUp Is Coming to Windows
Since we launched SpeakUp, the most frequent question we've heard is: "When is this coming to Windows?"
Today we can finally say: soon.
Why Windows
SpeakUp was born on macOS because Apple Silicon made on-device transcription fast and practical. But privacy shouldn't depend on which operating system you use. Windows users deserve the same thing: real dictation that stays on their machine, with no cloud and no subscription.
The timing is right. Dragon NaturallySpeaking — the dictation software that millions of Windows users relied on for decades — has been effectively discontinued by Microsoft. Dragon Home is gone. Dragon Professional costs $699 and hasn't had a meaningful update in years.
Meanwhile, Windows built-in dictation (Win+H) still requires a cloud connection on most PCs. Microsoft's new Fluid Dictation is impressive, but it only works on Copilot+ PCs with NPU hardware — a small fraction of the install base — and only in English.
There's a gap. A big one.
What We're Building
SpeakUp for Windows is a native app built with Tauri and whisper-rs, a Rust wrapper around OpenAI's whisper.cpp. It's lightweight, fast, and uses your GPU directly — NVIDIA (CUDA), AMD, and Intel (DirectML) all supported.
Everything that makes SpeakUp what it is on Mac carries over:
- 100% on-device — your voice never leaves your PC
- Works in every app — press a hotkey, speak, your words appear at the cursor
- No subscription — one price, forever
- German + English from day one — built by a team in Berlin
- No AI rewrites — your words, exactly as you said them
The State of Windows Dictation
We did a thorough market analysis before committing to this. Here's what we found:
There is no polished, on-device, one-time-purchase dictation app under $50 on Windows. The market is a barbell: free built-in tools at the bottom, $699 Dragon at the top, and cloud-dependent subscriptions filling the middle.
SpeakUp fills the empty slot.
